How buying a gun in Macon works
Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where Georgia law allows.
Georgia has no state purchase permit, registration or waiting period. A dealer sale requires a valid photo ID, ATF Form 4473 and a federal background check at the time of transfer. Federal rules set the dealer minimum age at 21 for handguns and 18 for rifles and shotguns. Private sales between Georgia residents do not have to go through a dealer, but using an FFL is the simplest way to confirm the buyer is eligible and to keep a clean record of the transfer.

Carrying a gun in Bibb County
Since 2022 Georgia has let a lawful weapons carrier, generally anyone 21 or older (18 for certain military members) who is not prohibited, carry a handgun openly or concealed without a license. A Weapons Carry License is still issued by the Bibb County Probate Court and helps with reciprocity in other states and in a few places where only license holders may carry. Courthouses, jails, secured government buildings and private property where the owner bars weapons remain restricted.
Hunting near Macon
Georgia runs a statewide deer season: archery opens in September, a primitive-weapons week follows in October, and firearms season typically opens in mid-to-late October and runs into mid-January. Either-sex days vary by county, and wildlife management areas hold their own shorter quota and sign-in hunts. Centerfire rifles, shotguns with slugs or buckshot, muzzleloaders and centerfire handguns are legal during firearms season. Check the 2026-27 Georgia Hunting Regulations for exact dates and the either-sex days in Bibb County.
Ocmulgee WMA downriver has a state firearms range, with Oconee and Cedar Creek WMA lands to the east; Georgia's firearms deer season runs statewide.
Macon is the parts stop for hunters from the rural counties around it, and the DNR's Ocmulgee range near Hawkinsville is about fifty minutes south.
